Review: Sky Movies' Tim Evans - Some movies manage to transcend a barking plot, a cast of talentless no-hopers and dimwitted dialogue to achieve a bizarrely compelling alchemy. Chemical Wedding is such a half-baked achievement. It's a hare-brained marriage of bargain-basement sci-fi, occult tomfoolery and softcore sexual absurdity. With Simon Callow in a velvet suit and matching titfer, natch.

It's contrived New Age bunkum...but delivered with such jawdropping conviction that you find yourself entranced as if watching a train collision in slow motion. This is the sort of camply preposterous nonsense where semen can inexplicably be delivered by fax and a wheelchair-bound codger with an electronic voice box gets the job of delivering the exposition. There's no attempt to rein in Callow - a lumbering hybrid of George Melly and Buddha - and he boisterously runs riot in a performance that has more ham than Porkinsons' factory.

Yet you will never be bored. So utterly doolally is this mincing extravaganza, that resistance is futile. Guilty pleasure of the year.

Description: The German title translates to "Fear of Shooting" rather than "Gun Shy".

"Foreign language films face the difficult task of entertaining in a substantial enough way so you forget about the subtitles before you. Gun-shy, an interesting German film does just that. A young man has a note dropped in his lap by an attractive female as he is riding the bus. The note reads 'help me' and with this action our attention is set on finding out what it is all about.

Lukas (Fabian Hinrichs) works for social services playing the role of meals on wheels for those who need assistance. The people he delivers food to seem to be his only contact with others until he meets Isabella (Lavinia Wilson). Isabella is the attractive, mysterious woman who gives him the note asking for help. They de-board the bus and before you know it they are talking about sex and she is staying the night at his place. The time they spend together as the film goes on has Isabella stringing Lukas along on a tight leash as he becomes more taken by her. Learning that she is skilled in the martial arts makes us wonder even more so why she needs help and what from.

Director Dito Tsintsadze does a solid job in directing a taut film with an intriguing script written by Dirk Kurbjuweit [author of the 1998 novel]. Together they have created a movie where the information omitted adds to the mystery of what is unfolding before us. We never really learn why the characters are ultimately the way they are, but some hints are given throughout that help provide a sketch. It is obvious why Lukas would want to help Isabella because not only is she good-looking, but he is also looking to fill a void of loneliness that encircles him.

The film uses humor to lessen some of its weightiness, such as the scenes with Lukas’ weird neighbor who is enamored with North Korea. The one place that the story fails though is in establishing motivation for what takes place in the end scene, unless it is meant to be attributed to emotional instability.

The acting performances by the leads are strong. Hinrichs creates an image of a misguided loner in Lukas. Perhaps Lukas is too easily influenced and that is why he falls into the dangerous trap of wanting Isabella, who herself is unstable. Wilson as Isabella portrays the master manipulator by being withholding and icy, while providing just enough interest in Lukas to do her bidding.

There is an underlying theme of addressing fears that runs throughout the course of the movie, deconstructing or understanding them so we can let go. This ties in well with the foreign film genre too. Don’t fear the subtitles, but embrace the opportunity to see movies told through a different perspective. If you do you might experience something like Gun-shy that is full of intrigue not only in what it presents, but what it leaves out for our imaginations to translate."

Description: "Antares gets its name from the ancient Greeks and means Anti-Ares. Ares is, of course, the God of War, also called Mars by the Romans. Antares is linked to the planet Mars because they are both about the same colour and brightness, so it is easy to get them confused. The official site tells us, "The film comprises three interconnected stories that are in a sense three 'Scorpio stories' with intense emotions, both positive and negative: sex, jealousy, violence, crisis and death." If you bear that in mind, it will give you a clue to the substance of this finely observed film, but the movie hooked me before I knew that, making fine comparisons that easily confound moral judgement.

Antares begins with a car crash (one that takes us quite unawares) and continues an intense pace for the first third of the movie, including explicit sex scenes. But the first story is that of Eva, a nurse, wife and mother. She becomes involved in an intensely passionate affair. The second story concerns a check-out girl, obsessively jealous of her partner who pastes billboards for a living, and lying to him to ensure his 'love'. The final story concerns a divorced couple where the man will not let go and the wife has started seeing someone else. The three stories fully intertwine only at the end.

Each story involves a couple and a third party, none are 'whiter than white'. But there are important differences, not least in how we view and judge them. Using 'truth' as a yardstick gets us nowhere as none of them are particularly honest – although the most violent person (the abusive husband of the last story) is probably the least dishonest. In the first couple (a white collar family, listening to Schubert, raising a teenage daughter with love and care), we somehow feel that the infidelity is less 'wrong' than in the later example. It might even be the safety valve, without which the couple (who communicate politely but not very effectively) would have reached breaking point, hurting everyone but especially the child. In the second example, both partners are trying to control the other and we instinctively feel they are more selfish and less sympathetic. A yardstick becomes, who is hurt? What was the intention to hurt or nurture? Their motives to each other seem shallower, their methods more devious, they are less likable. They are also less interesting – given that this film will appeal to a highbrow audience, do we judge them worse because they are poor and less intelligent? But then we see the third scenario – a brutal, dangerous husband. Can the wife be blamed that she has 'moved on'? the husband is externally convincing, but we learn he has raped and beaten her and she is in fear of him. His 'reality' is a different one to hers. Compared to the billboard-poster, who seemed such a reprobate a minute ago, he is a monster.

Notice how our perceptions and judgements of the characters are altered as well by the use of nudity in different ways, by the use of humour (a person seems less 'bad' when they are funny, irrespective of the facts), and by our comparisons with 'better' and 'worse' individuals. Trying to make moral judgements becomes a very confusing affair, but most people will be able to distinguish between the non-violent and almost loving deception of the first couple compared to the violent triangle of the last story. The effective attempt to 'do the right thing' in spite of overriding passions manifests itself differently.

If you found movies like Closer intriguing as a moral primer, take Antares on for a more difficult conundrum. It takes someone of considerable skill to weave such a tapestry effectively, and Götz Spielmann distinguishes himself in Antares as a director of profound insight, considerable talent and great artistic integrity."

Description: A wonderful modern Hänsel and Gretel version by Francois Ozon, one of today's most interesting French filmmakers. Natacha Regnier (La vie rêvée des anges) is most impressive as the scheming and unscrupulous, yet at the same time strangely innocent and childlike schoolgirl Alice who brings her impotent boyfriend Luc (not-so impressive, though ok Jérémie Renier) to killing their handsome Arab schoolmate Said she is lusting for. As for her motivations, the Rimbaud quote ("Un crime!...") in one of the flashback scenes seems to tell the most about it. Maybe she also hates Said because he is sexually aggressive and at the same time very desirable to her - so he doesn't give her that complete control she has with Luc who is non-menacing to her in any way whatsoever.

Dalek porn romp shockerNSFW Those readers who have ever wondered in an idle moment how a couple of Daleks would respond to the presence of three naked lesbians romping in their Mothership might recently have found the answer in the shape of a sci-fi smutfest entitled "Abducted by the Daleks".

Sadly, however, you'll have to wonder on because the BBC and the estate of Dalek creator Terry Nation have moved swiftly to pull the plug on the the trundling salt-cellars' intergalactic rumpy-pumpy.

The 1,000-disc limited edition DVD recently popped up on eBay but has now been removed at the Corporation's behest. The blurb stated:

ABDUCTED BY THE DALEKS: A brand new limited edition release (1000 (numbered) discs). For obvious reasons this is going to become a very collectible item especailly with the resurgence in the interest in Dr.Who. The DVDs will be sold on an incremental basis (eg: Lowest number first). The disc contains a 56 minute main feature plus a 40 minute outake/alternative version plus a trailer.

Yes yes, but what about the hot Dalek-on-girl-on-girl action? Here's more:

The story centers around three sexy young disco babes who have met the mysterious Anna. As they journey through the woods they discuss the legend of The Serial Skinner not knowing that they are already being observed by a more ambitious and ruthless species of Alien.... the daleks!!!

To cut to the chase - literally - here's how UK tabloid the Sun describes it: "Dr Who's foes capture three naked 'disco babes' in the 18-rated DVD. They chase the girls around their spaceship and grope them with their plungers."

Oh dear, oh dear. The director of Terry Nation's estate, Tim Hancock, told the paper: "The reason the Daleks are still the most sinister thing in the universe is because they do not make things like porn. They weren't ever intended to be sexual creatures. It's simple, Daleks do not do porn."

Plot Synopsis:
After what seems an eternity of driving around in the dark, wandering about in that fake forest and losing all their clothes simply because the script said they should, four young women with more silicone than acting talent get beamed aboard a spaceship where three rather tatty looking Daleks shout a lot, chain the girls up and shoot badly matted death rays at them in an effort to learn more about the human race.

Description: Catherine Breillat's A Ma Soeur! is a touchingly honest but also highly disturbing account of two French middle-class teenage sisters' family holiday. As sexually explicit as Breillat's earlier picture, Romance, this film focuses on the travails of flabby 12-year-old Anais Pingot (Anais Reboux), who is the bane and the opposite of her glamorous elder sister Elena (Roxane Mesquida). Constantly having to live in the shadow of Elena and being nagged by her workaholic father (Romain Goupil), lonely Anais resorts to eating and her imagination for pleasure. Her 15-year-old sister, in contrast, is desperate to find romantic love. Their differences are harshly exposed when Elena starts a frantic affair with Italian law student Fernando (Libero De Rienzo). To minimise the risk of being discovered by their parents, Anais accompanies Fernando and Elena throughout their clumsy encounters. She's even present during the pair's sexual experimentation.

Anais Reboux's depiction of an introverted young woman is both shocking and true to life, particularly the scene when she swims around a swimming pool kissing and conversing with the pool's diving board and steps as if they were imaginary lovers. The film actually thrives on very little, a simple plot, a 25-minute bedroom scene, and the monotony of the fatal motorway trip home. Like violence itself, the violent ending seems a particularly pointless and baffling finale for an otherwise thought-provoking film.

Description: If you loved Lilja 4Ever - there's something wrong with you. You won't love this film - that's for sure - unless there's something wrong with you. This film is nearly - but only nearly - unwatchable. And I take that as a sign of its success. Had we been in any way aroused by what we saw, had we been allowed to distance ourselves from the suffering we saw, had Moodysson failed to reveal the conflicted, ambivalent motivations underlying the actions of these characters - who say little but reveal much - the film would be another Requiem For a Dream - but it isn't. You won't watch this film twice - unless there is something wrong with you. But it's honest in the way few films dealing with the subject are. I don't think it pretends to be representative of the porn industry as a whole - but it does remind us that our consumption of porn has a price. This is not an enjoyable movie. It shouldn't be an enjoyable movie. But is it well thought out? Well executed? Well acted? Important. Yes, it is. It's been awhile since Sweden has produced a movie that has shocked complacent audiences - for the past few decades it's been churning out silly nostalgia-driven films. I loved Show Me Love - but this is a far superior film.
